Hi!
We are offering a Special Class this Summer! We have the privilege of offering a class that is normally only available to students at Western Washington University. This class will be taught by Dr. Gaye Green (Chair of the Art Department at WWU) and Rosanna Porter (Award-winning children’s book author). By taking this class, you can earn 1 Graduate or Undergraduate credit.
Bringing Books to Life: Integrating Literature, Art, Theater, Music, and Dance/Creative Movement
“Bringing Books to Life” is an instructional method that uses the four art forms- Visual art, dance/creative movement, music, and theater to animate the plot and characters of a book in an interactive performance. The goal of this instructional approach is to enhance the literary experience of students by fostering their imagination through the senses. In turn, this experience offers teachers the opportunity to practice integrating the arts with literature and to design an interactive performance. The presentations also demonstrate that integration is a rich and meaningful approach to teaching and a pedagogical tool that can be utilized in all subject areas by addressing concepts, themes, subject matter, and issues.
The interactive workshop will use the methods of Bringing Books to Life to provide teachers with the instructional strategies and practical application to create, develop, and implement their own performances in the classroom. The workshop will show teachers how to put on both large and small theater performances with minimal prep and cost. It expands the concepts of Reader’s Theater into the four arts. Teachers will collaboratively apply the theory of bringing text to life and create a powerful interpretation of a story in an easy, effective way. Upon completion of the workshop, teachers will have all the necessary tools to apply it in their own classrooms.
